Squeezing the most out of PiPs

PiPs, Pricing in Proportion, the biggest change in Royal Mail postal pricing since the introduction of the Penny Black, was introduced in August 2006. Despite some major concerns by some people the change seems to have gone smoother than expected. The cost for 70% of post should stay the same or reduce but there are some areas that have INCREASED DRAMATICALLY.
If you have been mailing A4 letters or promotional material in C4 envelopes you could be paying an extra 38% per envelope! We have been looking at ways to save our client's money, particularly with their large promotional mailings.

A4 to A5
One solution is to just fold your A4 document in half to A5. This will then come in the lower postal rate band and save you 38% on 2nd class posting. That will save you money but your mailing may loose some of its impact.
Here at Portfolio Associates we've been looking at alternative ways around the problem and have already produced A5 folded versions of mailers that the clients where previously mailing as A4 mailers. We have designed the mailers to have the same, if not more, impact than previously.

Put on more weight, but not pounds
One benefit of 'Pricing in Proportion' is that the lowest weight band has been increased from 60g to 100g. This gives you the option to put more into and to make more of, your mailings.
The biggest benefit, for example, is if you previously produced an A4 catalogue, mailing it in a C4 envelope making sure the total weight stayed under 60g. Now, if that catalogue was redesigned to A5 you could also extend the catalogue to include more products or more useful sales information, AND save money!
